BlackNerd SGC 2013 LIVE Ninja Turtles Rant
Black Nerd Rants on William Fichtner being cast as Shredder in the Michael Bay produced reboot Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, on how Hollywood is scared to have Asian villains when selling movie overseas (i.e. The Mandarin in Iron Man 3), how black people couldn't be villains (but can be bosses of comic book news teams) and "reverse racism".
True, Bay seems capable of destroying of any marketable idea. Just add explosions and a LOT of CGI and it'll be fine...
Okay, so I went about this the wrong way. I said some stupid things (VERY stupid things) and my point was missed because of my own ridiculous rants which had nothing to do with my original point and more at lashing out. I apologize.
Now, my original point was that casting a race-specific actor hasn't had all that much success. Am I saying there aren't talented actors that aren't white? No, of course not. All that I am saying, (and probably failing miserably at) is that today's movie audiences want a vilian (or hero) to look like the source material. It's a hard truth, but how many Japanese characters do you know that actually look Japanese? Also, and it kills me to say this, but the language barrier is there as well. We want to be pandered to, we want to be entertained, and we don't want to have to try to interpret what someone said who didn't have the 'luxury' of having English be their first language. It's not fair, it's not the right thing to do, but they have to pander to what they consider to be the average American audience.
Take the first live action TMNT movie, for instance. All Asian characters (Splinter, Shredder, Tatsuo) had their voices dubbed over. We can understand the turtles voices, but why the Japanese characters? Simple. To get over the language barrier. Again, it's not fair, but that's what the movie producers felt to be the right move. Fast forward to today. So, a white gut is cast as Shredder. It shouldn't really surprise you. Hollywood always does this. Hans Gruber, a decidedly German persona, was played by Alan Rickman, a decidedly un-German actor, in probably the most touted movie on the internet. Why? Because he's a great actor, that's why. Why would you cast Mickey Rourke as a Russian when it's painfully obvious that he's not? Answer: Good actors can swing your disbelief just enough to make a god movie. My point, (before I started trolling) is that sometimes the right actor for the role doesn't HAVE to be that particular race.
True, we should be proud of our heritage, and I am. However, the lumping of 'Orientals" into 'Asian" is where the offense comes in. I actually don't give a rat's ass one way or the other, but it was fun to get your fur up. Now that the trolling is done, I don't see what your problem with Fichner is. he seems competent enough in Armageddon and Ultraviolet. Now, does he fit as the Shredder, your guess is as good as mine. Who would you rather see?
Yes, I do know what face palming is. That was the joke.
No, I didn't look it up, because - quite honestly - casting Fitchner in a role that he doesn't fit when there are so many other more capable and fitting actors only shows Bay's prejudices (as if the Transformers movies didn't do so enough on their own). Also, you forgot Laos, Taiwan, and Russia among others. And to be honest, I'd be happy with someone from ANY of those countries over Fitchner. Also, I don't see how "Asian" would be any more offensive than "European." Now, had I added some sort of derogatory slur to the end of it, that would've been all kinds of offensive. However, anyone whose ancestry comes from an Asian country is Asian, and should be damn proud of that heritage.
Also, do you even know what a facepalm is? Because no matter how much you do it, you don't put your head through a wall, unless you're doing it very wrong.
Yeah, I just went back and read what I wrote. Jesus man, relax, indeed. I just got started on a rant, and didn't hit the brakes when I should have. Oroko Saki as a white guy (or Anglo-Saxon-Canadian-Swiss-Belgian) would be strange, to say the least. I wasn't trying to get all uppity. I had just had an argument with someone else online about the casting of the Dragonball movie (a moot point, as it turns out) and started to lash out at everyone.
Why would pointing out your short-sighted points, like your comment that William Fitchner "probably" doesn't have Ninjitsu training...So, you never actually found out. Also, like I said, the term 'Asian' is actually offensive. Did you mean Mongolia? Or how about Indonesia? They are all in Asia, jackass. So, please keep 'facepalming', until you put the back of your damn head through a wall.
You are the man Black Nerd! I also wonder whats to become of the Ninja Turtle reboot.
*facepalm* Please tell me you're trolling me.
No, I did not read your post as my comment was not a response to your post (plus, my comment was made a few days prior to you posting on this video so how could I?) Ok, maybe I should have said "non-Japanese actors play him before" but I clearly noted that Shredder is of Japanese descent and even his name Oroku Saki is a freakin' Japanese name. I'm sorry if you took offense to this, but perhaps in this case then you can no longer also call people black, white, whatever. It's a broad term used to sum up those of similar areas (Asians - ie. people of descent from Asian countries). Jesus, man, relax. I mean, yeah I'm white but I don't get all uppity unless someone refers to me as "Canadian" or "Norwegian."
I'm not offended by an "ANGLO-CAUCASIAN-AMERICAN" playing The Shredder - I just find that he should be played by a Japanese actor as that is the heritage of the character himself. Having a non-Japanese person named "Oroku Saki" seems a bit strange, no?
Watch...the Black Nerd is somehow offended by the readiness to cast a white person as Shredder, but does NOT address the idea that we might be okay with it. Play up the racism, because that's all you've got going for you. Ten bucks says he hits me for saying 'black', even though he ho calls himself that.
You see? "A white guy playing Goku.." At least you knew where I would go with that. Goku is a Saiyan, not of any discernable race. However, did you not read my post? The term "Asian" is VERY offensive to us. Which Asian do you mean? There's the Phillipines, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Thai...Exactly which 'Asian" did you mean?
Again, casting Asians ( We find that word VERY offensive, by the way) just because we're all trained in martial arts (another fallacy that you have perpetuated) means that you have to ignore the look, style, and delivery of someone who genuinely speaks English. But what do I know? We all use chopstick s and know Kung Fu, according to you.
I'm really tired of this. I'm half Japanese, and even I don't question the casting. It has to do with the language barrier, as well as the fact that Anime/Manga tend on larger eyes to convey good guys. I notice you didn't bitch about Michael Clarke Duncan (R.I.P.) being cast as the Kingpin or Samuel L. Jackson being Nick Fury. I understand that you have to rant about his tripe, but at least be objective. You are so far into hypocrite range that it is hilarious.
This reminds me of some arguments that ensued when Idris Elba was cast to play Heimdall in Thor. I found the decision questionable.
Andre was on to something when he mentioned the trend of black people being depicted as workplace management in films, though it went way beyond that long ago. Over the last sixteen years or so we've received ever more black action heroes, military leaders, government officials, and even gods. Credit Hollywood with persistence if nothing else.
I am interested in seeing what Jamie Foxx does with Electro. All I've caught is that picture with him in the hoodie, which damn sure looks better than the classic costume.
First the entire change to the TMNT series (Turtles being aliens now), then Megan Fox as April and now this... Aw man... Bay is raping this series. Didn't Eastman and Laird have the last word on this?
Funny part is that the alien nature of the Turtles is justified due to the ooze being made by the Ultroms (Kraangs in the latest series), which are aliens...
Bay will make everything in the movies be of alien origin and made of explodium.
There are so many good Asian action stars too! Let's see... should we cast William Fitchner who probably hasn't had any kind of Ninjutsu training in his life, or someone like Jet Li who made his career on martial arts movies? My vote is still Jet Li.
Considering it's still a Bay movie? I don't have high hopes, unfortunately.
Part of me wants this movie to be good because I'm a big fan of the Turtles, but deep down I'm afraid this movie is going to be even worse than Bay's Transformer movies.
Well actually in the 2003 series Shredder was an alien and Bay being Bay it wouldn't surprise me if he chose to recreate that version.
