Games that Disappointed and Surprised Us
What are some games that you were let down or pleasantly surprised by?
oh yea, a game that surprised me too was rocco's modern life for snes.
great video guys i think i'm addicted to your shows now. I'm surprised a mega man game didn't make the list, cause lord knows it's had its ups and downs. I would have to say that all the PS1 final fantasy's disappointed a little bit (after playing six I never got the same feeling from these other ones). final fantasy 10 made it all better tho. a game that surprised me..? hmm, I would have to say recently it was tomba. the game looked bad, and looked like it played bad when my friend was playing it, but then when i played it I had a blast :-D I'll be checking out your other episodes guys!
I respect that opinion and guts it took to comment that. I would say this is a perfect showing on how games, like any other medium, is all about tastes. What you saw as flaws people may have saw as triumphs: the riddler stuff and open world was just enough.
Once again, this is not to riff on you. Just saying as a guy who loved Arkham City
Disappointing, I would probably go with Other M from the top of my head. Not bad, but not amazing. With a surprise, I would go with Goemon's Great Adventure. It was much better than what I would have ever thought.
Disappointed: Tomb Raider II. I don't know if my relevant play skills somehow deteriorated after beating its predecessor, but I found the puzzles less intuitive and clumsily implemented in comparison to those in Tomb Raider. The experience became frustrating and I never completed the game.
Surprised: Halo. When I first heard about it, I paid it no mind. The game came across as just another first-person shooter featuring aliens. Once I sat down and played it, I really felt like a dumbass for ignoring all the word of mouth.
Dissapointing: Kingdom Hearts 1. I loved 358 days, and when I finally got a ps2 and played kingdom hearts 1 I just couldn't get into it for some reason. I'm sure if I could play it back in the day right after I beat 358 days I'd love it
Suprised: Minecraft. My friend showed me the pc classic mode 3 years ago and I ignored it, ended up being addicted a week later
Disappointing: Beyond Good and Evil: I hear from just about everyone that it's an awesome cult classic for the PS2. I tried to like it, I really did, but I just couldn't do it.
Surprising: Mischief Maker: Came in expecting nothing from this game, and I loved it, although I do hear that some people don't like it. Bastion: Got it because it was part of the summer of arcade a couple years back, expecting nothing at all, and what I got was quite possibly the greatest gaming experience on my 360 in years.
i'm inclined to agree with Mario Kart 7. Good game, not as good as it should have been. For surprising, i'd go with The World Ends With You (DS) and Bionicle Heroes (the GBA version), both were surprising and refreshing titles.
It just goes to show that ratings don't count for shit. You can recommend something or warn folk away from it, but ultimately reviewers cannot dictate what players should or shouldn't play. Except Call of Juarez 2, that game is shit.
As a Chrono Trigger sequel, it was more or less a total failure, but it was also one of my favorite games as a teen, and even to this day.
I don't blame ya for not taking a shine to it, but it'll always hold a special place in my heart.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one disappointed with Mario Kart 7,Mario Kart DS had more to offer.
Disappointed? Morrowind, Oblivion, Pikmin 2, the World Ends With You....the list goes on...
Honestly the only game I bought that I regret in recent memory is Mario Kart for the DS. I never played any Mario Kart games and I kept hearing all this talk about how awesome they were. Well I bought into the hype and got the game. Should of know it's a game you can't really enjoy unless you play with other people. After all I don't like racing games yet some how I thought I'd like this one as a single player game.
Disappointed: I'm not going to make any friends, but Jet Set Radio. Graphics were great, gameplay was an original idea, but quite flawed, and going into the game after hearing everyone praise it so much was a bit of a mistake. Also on a personal level, Black and Conflict: Desert Storm had great first levels and... everything slowly went downhill afterwards. Everything. Also, Animal Crossing. And the GameCube version of Micro Machines should be illegal.
Surpassed: Ivy the Kiwi has wrestled Ace Attorney, Professor Layton and Zelda away from the title of my favourite Zelda game. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus also deserve credit considering that, like Jet Set Radio, everyone told me amazing things about them, and yet my expectations were STILL surpassed by them. Also, Mother 3.
Jared did a great review of Quest 64 on YouTube, you should look it up if you have the time.
Disappointing? Final Fantasy III on DS.
Surprising? Arcana Heart.
I'm completely alone on this one... but I was disappointed with Batman Archam City. I think the francise took a turn for the worst and was more flash in the pan than its predecessor, throwing countless enemies and batman references aimed more at the fanboys of the series rather than the passionate gamer. By doing so, some of the storytelling elements that made Asylum so profund were completely sacrificed! The open world was narrow, the Riddler quests superflous, the new weapons useless/ gimmicky and the pay-off.... ok well the ending was spectacular I'll give it that. To its credit, the stealth mode still on par as well, but thats all the praise I'll be giving it!
CHRONO CROSS. As a game on it's own . . . okay, not my cuppa, there's stuff about it I don't like but it's all right I guess. But as a direct sequel to Chrono Trigger, my dear Lord that game pissed me off. Set it in an unfamiliar world, give it a totally retconned backstory (seriously, we're talking Highlander-calibur rewriting here), and completely retool the gameplay. *God* it made me mad.
I liked Quest 64...but anyway Goemon was AWESOME!!! i keep hoping we will see it on VC someday. The game series that surprised me was Mega Man Battle Network and Star Force. I didn't think the collecting and battling could be that fun!
A game that disappointed me a ton was Quest 64. I was waiting for any RPG to come out for the N64 and we got....that. I tried getting deep into it but I couldn't get pass everything broken about it.
The one game that surprised me the most was Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon for the N64 (I love that system <3). I rented it one weekend, hoping it wouldn't be too bad and I was blown away with the gameplay, music, artwork and massive culture put into it. Also, It made me want to learn and study more on Japanese culture and sparked my interest in anime so....Thank you Goemon.
