Great video. Sega was one of the big 3 in the 70's & through the mid 80's along with Taito & Atari. Data East was probably the next biggest company to follow those 3. Though it took them a while to get success in the U.S. console market, they were on an amazing run in arcade games with games like the ones you mentioned (Wonder Boy--which was actually developed by Westone but the games were always Sega exclusives, Space Harrier, and Fantasy Zone) and many others like Out Run, Shinobi, Golden Axe, After Burner, Power Drift, Flicky, Alex Kidd, Galaxy Force II, Cotton (developed by Success), Hang-On, Thunder Blade, Altered Beast, Alien Syndrome, E-SWAT, Spider-Man: The Video Game, Super Monaco GP, Rail Chase, the various sequels of these games, and plenty of others.
Very informative and great video.
Sega probably would still be making hardware had they not made a string of mistakes in a row nor had a "feud" occurring between the US and Japan branches.
Great informative video!
Sega has been doing even worst now because sonic free riders, sonic the hedgehog on Xbox 360,some parts of sonic generations and some parts of sonic unleashed all sucked in my opinion.
Rise and....somewhat fall.
I honestly was waiting for a great Sega video, I always wondered about Sega and it's rise and thanks to you I know. Great Job and keep them coming.
i wrote a blog about this and their games. Sega does extremly well in Europe, Austrailia and South America than in the US. Sega is always been as that company here in the US that no one cares for. Yet its the next big thing else where. You also have to notice that Sega Changed most of the things we have today in gaming like Releases on Tuesday(Sonic 2'sday) Online gameplay, analog controllers. And the fanbase will continue to support Sega till its last breath in the war. I know i will.
They have made some unwise decisions in the past, but I feel as if their games are getting slightly better these days.
Meh Sega sucks...always have, always will.
I meant no offense by that statement. The fact is Japan and North America ARE more influence, I didn't make up that line myself.
Well done, glitboy. I recall how Nintendo blundered on passing up on the development of the PlayStation, but I don't remember hearing that Sega made not only that made grave error, but passing on the Xbox as well. It's stunning to think about what could have been had Sega opted to go with either of those two soon-to-be powerhouses. Of the two, I think Sega joining forces with Microsoft would've produced something truly mind-blowing given how Sega pioneered the concept of online play on consoles, and Xbox fans would have something more than just Master Chief to boast about. Heck, imagine what could have happened had this team been forged and that act pushed Nintendo to rally together with Sony after all! What a strange world that would be...
The one thing I've always hated is the fact that the European market always gets screwed over! Even back in the day the European market was larger than the Japanese one! Also SEGA knew that they were more successful in Europe & South America and completely shut Nintendo out of some countries! Not to mention SEGA created SEGA World attractions in the UK and mainland Europe which were very successful (I rember going to the one in London! Awesome time). The Dreamcast & Saturn lasted alot longer in Europe! The Master System was supported up until 1997 in Brazil & still, variations of emulated consoles are still made!
This was a very concise history! The SC-3000 was a gaming computer like the Commodore 64 & ZX Spectrum not a console!
One of the downsides for SEGA was that they were always a bit too ahead of the game! The Dreamcast was revolutionary but it came too early! If it had cme out at the same time as the Xbox or slightly beofre when online gaming was becoming easier to do then it might have done better!
Actually there was A LOT of reasons why the Saturn died. The Saturn for one did amazing in Japan. But also when the Saturn was released SEGA had 6 ACTIVE consoles out and with the 32x also burned consumers and fans. There is WAY more in the history that you missed out but it was nice
Yup, the sad truth is Sega screwed themself over pretty good come 1995. A lot of dumb moves will kill you. But I still love my Sega Consoles.
Im sorry but saying that europe is not as influencial as US and Japan is simply a tipical american talking, you know we buy stuff too our market is also big so saying that is not very acurate and That helped sega alot not only in the Master system but also on the saturn so much that sega even had special Branches in various countries of europe.
Thank you! Yes, Sony didn't do anything but hit the final nail in. One company doesn't kill another unless the OTHER SCREWS UP THEMSELVES MAJORLY.
Sony may have delivered the finishing blow, but the seeds of Sega's destruction were sown largely by the obstinacy, shortsightedness, and, at times, sheer stupidity of Sega of Japan.
They deserved every bit of rancor Sega fans leveled at them.
