Layoffs are necessary to run companies. I don't always understand the pointless vilification of all companies when they do it. Oil companies and US car companies that either get massive subsidies from the government like the former or got bailed out like the later should be expected to employ more people and when they lay people off people have every right to be pissed as tax payer money went into it. But when a company buys a not so profitable branch of another company they obviously intend to make it profitable and minimizing and focusing is the easiest, quickest and often best approach. Steve Jobs did that at Apple when he came back as CEO. He focused on less products and thus cut a lot of jobs and production. It happens. Its life.
