There's no offline story mode, but there is a story. There are 2 elements to the story, one is random event tablets, in missions the player may randomly find event tablets, when the player "speaks" to the tablet, a cutscene will start. Usually these cutscenes are just NPCs talking to you, and these give some background info about the lore of the game. The other story element is the Matterboard. At the start of the game the player receives the matterboard, it's a table that has several orbs, and each of the orbs has a different requirement. As the player completes the requirements for the orbs (some involve talking with NPCs either in the lobby or in a event tablet in a mission, others involve finding specific items from specific enemies), the player unlocks story missions.
