I really don't mind the story. It's his show, he can do what he wants with it. as long as there's something to think about somewhere in it.

OK there is something to the thought that we dehumanize zombies to make them easier to kill. But what is the change that brings them from human to sub-human? I think often the main character succumbs to the same thing the other people fall to. So the main character is usually not special. It doesn't seem like an ideology, because no idea is that infectious.
As an alternate hypothesis. What if it the zombie hoard is an anthropomorphic representation of a catastrophe like a natural disaster or an environmental disaster. Things that one is so powerless against, but now you can fight it and take out your frustration on that. There is similarities in the way that it happens to both good and bad people, rich or poor, majority and minority, woman or man.

The hard truth about zombies is a bit sadly true. It's surprising to see that you had the courage to say that. And now that you mention it, zombies have been on the rise in popularity. I generally enjoy anything-zombie related in a game (including nonhumans) since it brings forth different strategies to eradicate them.

Zombies do seem to be the flavour of the decade! There's a new thing going around the UK called 2.8 hours later! Basically its a social event where a part of a city centre is cornered off and people have to get to different checkpoints and escape other people dressed as zombies! If you get cuaght you become a zombie! Abrilliant idea! Go check it out! I did it in Glasgow & was tremendous fum! Also knackering!

Zombies are essentially a force of a growing threat that assimilates whatever falls victim to them. It makes the poor sap another brainless follower of the hoard. The survivors are maintaining their free choice, their right to live, not as those things but as sentient people.
It's an interesting comparison to look to Communism versus individual freedom.
