I can't say I agree with you on everything in this video. It is really too bad that the gaming community is split between the "hardcore" and the "casual". I do want to say that while Nintendo did take a risk with motion controls...risks don't always deserve to be rewarded. It's called a risk for a reason. The motion controls risk failed to appeal to the "hardcore" gamer community as you call them. I don't play any FPS games or anything like that. I'm mostly a Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Assassin's Creed, Soul Calibur, and The Elder Scrolls, etc kind of gamer...and if that makes me a hardcore gamer....so be it. But I didn't find motion controls all that great...and over this last generation I turned from a teenager into an adult (22 years old now).
Nintendo's took a risk, yes. I don't think it paid off for Nintendo to attract the "HC" gamers, however. I always found the motion controls to be clunky and generally slow and annoying to use. Twilight Princess...just felt awful to me. So nearly every time I play the Wii, I use the gamecube controller. I really just feel that motion controls are still too primitive to get the job done. Everything just seems so inaccurate and unrefined. Perhaps, like the virtual boy, it was just too early.
I think the xbox 360 and ps3 were innovative in their own right. For example: The xbox 360 had a title call Ninety Nine Nights. It featured something that was never possible before on a game console. It was a hack and slash game with a generic fantasy medieval story line. What was cool about it....was that there were thousands of enemies on the screen at once and you could wipe out hundreds of enemies in one swing of your sword. Battlefields like orcs in LOTR were actual battlefields. Needless to say, this really help put you right into the action. So when people bring up that hardware specs don't make a game...this is true, but the developers used this hardware specs to produce games that give some really immersible gameplay. I just remember playing LOTR games on the GCN and seeing 10 orcs....really isn't much of an army, is it? Motions controls...just kind of gimmicky still. I don't feel like I am swinging a real sword. I feel like I'm swinging a plastic spatula.
I applaud Nintendo for taking a chance, but you know that chance really alienated a large group of players and Nintendo solidified that making games that appealed strictly to those who are too stubborn to give up on their zelda games, pokemon, metroid games, etc (I'm one of those people...I love them to death.) and the new found casual gamers.
I firmly believe that casual gamers sustained Nintendo this generation. Die hards can't keep the company afloat alone. Hardcore gamers, buy a lot of games...so I think that is a good market to tap into again. I know Nintendo is trying to fix their mistakes by releasing more hardcore games for their Wii-U, but honestly, I'm not buying into it. A lot of supposed hardcore games that I see coming to the Wii and Wii-U have this blitter flavor of Nintendo seasoning over them in one way or the other. It's hard to explain. I'm not too thrilled with the gamepad either. I don't see how it makes the games I want to play better other than better inventory management or having a map displayed on my controller. I don't think I'll be buying into any 8th gen consoles right away this coming generation.
I feel very conflicted by all this. I want my Nintendo characters, but I also want games that are much darker and touch on much more mature topics and themes. A lot of us can't afford two consoles and I really wish Nintendo would try harder to win my heart back. I had to make a choice last generation and it ended up being Microsoft. I have no alliance this coming generation....so fight for my dollar gaming companies.

I honestly think the stupid third party Wii game developers didn't tap into the Wii's full potential. The only games where the motion controls really ever worked well were shooters like 007 Quantum of Solace,Goldeneye 007(remake),and maybe the Call of Duty games.Shaking the Nunchuck to manually reload seems to somehow work better than holding down a button to do so.Aiming with the pointer is even more precise than aiming with dual analog sticks. The Wii Remote itself has a realistic trigger(the B button).

Indeed, best FPS aim control I have ever had was metroid prime 3.

Another instance of over-looking successes and overemphasizing failures.
And again, little appears with regards to the actual realities of both the PS3 and 360.
That being said, one massive bright spot is overlooked by a lot of people as they seem too narrow-viewed to look at the entire picture of the industry: That bright spot would be Steam.
I do have to say that I do also like his nods to the fact that modern gaming has some really good stuff.

I may not be that well-known overall but I could care less about that. Now I have legitimate friends on the internet (well, at least I like to think so), which I didn’t think was ever possible to do. And I also have people to thank and Phoropter Service Center mention (I guess you could think of it as my own Sub Saturday of sorts).

Once again Bob proved how little he knows about games. Nintendo is not going into the next round flush with cash, Nintendo this year has posted it's first ever loss since they entered gaming. Nintendo themselves have admitted that catering only to the casuals was a huge mistake because in the end it cost them big time. Oh, but Bob chooses to ignore that because it makes his precious Nintendo look bad. He bashes the PS3 and 360 because they didn't do anything innovative right, only Nintendo did. Despite the last 2 Zelda games have been Ocarina of Time with new features. Mario Galaxy might as well be called Mario 64 in Space. New Super Mario Bros Wii is just a new version of SMB from the NES days. They didn't do anything new either. Everyone did the me too game and relied on sure bets. Sure there was a few companies which would try new things like No More Heroes (good game, sequel sucked), EA with Dead Space (which is way better than RE4 and 5), Mirror's Edge and stuff like that, but for the most part like Hollywood, sequels run the business.
