Another reason so many gamers are against newcomers is this: Hard core games were often people who didn't have other hobbies to have. With back in the 80s and 90s, when gamers were consider nerdy or lame because they were new (As this time people were often very conservative towards new customs and cultures), these hard core gamers found imaginary pride in what they did. Like how all minorities make it a good thing about what they have, like black pride, or gay pride, these people felt that because normal people didn't understand them, they had power. But once normal people became able to like and play these games, they felt ordinary. they felt excluded again because they didn't have something to be proud about. Nowadays, that jerk who steals your lunch money at school, will also be able to kick your butt at LoL, so this further goes to deflate these individuals ego and make them angry about their own inferiority complexes.
The maker of AC3 said that easy mode ruined games?
That's kind of ironic how AC3's difficulty ruined AC3 for me. (or maybe it's because I've never played AC before, or Far Cry 3 and Deus Ex have better stealth mechanic, actually, AC3 didn't have that much stealth, ... like at all)
well I for one as a writer do love the narrative of games, but skipping the gameplay does sort of remove it from being a game. now in a DvD or book you don't affect the plot in anyway it was planned out from the start where you'd have no interaction. Imagine taking an old pick your own adventure book and skipping to one of the cool parts. you aren't meant to be there. you're supposed to pick your way to it now again this doesn't add in skill, but if you do that in a heavily narrative based game it spoils some of its fun. Now a not heavily narrative based game skipping the gameplay that's you missing out.
My examples would be AC3 which in my opinion the opening plot point of playing as Conner's father before you play Conner and what happens then screwed all of my interest in the game. That led me to not want to play to get to the rest of the story in that case yes I'd love to skip ahead.
Now in for example PMD 2 its an RPG where the plot comes along nicely and what naught, but if you skip ahead for the story then you miss the areas where the characters grow to mean something which makes the climax that much more powerful.
I'd never do it because I like the influence and it feels like I'm more there then if I just sit back and watch. If a game was designed like some current point and clicks that the game is minimal the story is big fine go ahead skip puzzle would be great, but not for a game based on the gameplay.
oh and easy mode. we all had to play on that at one point. I started on the NES. I still start on easy for new games because I want to get good so playing the harder difficulties mean something its progression not just jumping into death for the first three hours.
I love how every character's name ends with -thinker.
sorry double post
Dear Ivan, In the GameOverthinker's last mailbag, he mentioned that an independently made console would be great but unrealistic right now. In light of that, what's his opinion on the recent record-breaking success of the Android based OUYA console's kickstarter campaign? A pleasant surprise, a promising start, an interesting development worth keeping an eye on or a valiant (but ultimately futile) effort destined for commercial failure?
Dear Ivan, since you're such a big Navi fan, what's your opinion on the general opinion of Navi's annoyance in such classic as Ocarina of Time? On an unrelated event, since you like ponies, do you clop and what is your opinion on cloppers? This should be funny.
hi, i know this has been said alredy, but the video player is really bad, not only takes too much to load, but i cant even stop the video to let it load, it only loads while watching it. my internet connection is not bad at all, i can even watch hd videos on the go, without stoping the video
I often hear the Game Overthinker talk about how the medium is going downhill, with few good games that don't get enough attention anyways. Would you mind recommending some modern games that you think ARE worth checking out?
Dear Ivan: Since you're a brony, I want to know what you think of the ever-growing brony fan-game community. Also, which of the better-known games (e.g. Fighting is Magic, My Little Investigations) are you looking forward to?
Kainchild: Dear Navi...cough...I mean Ivan: What is your opinion on secondary sidekick characters in games of past and present? Do you think games should have more of them?
Half ass green screen...that pretty much summed it up
Dear Ivan: What was the first hand-held system or console you owned?
BTW SA, why is this getting bumped to front page over and over again? I think once is enough.
Ivan, what do you think of the use of fairies in games given that they are almost always supporting characters rather than protagonists themselves?
ivan what is your opinion on the people that complain that minecraft is getting ruined by all the new updates lately? and what do you feel about it yourself?
Dear Ivan, what are the nicknames you had throughout your life?
Dear Ivan, What are your plans once you've completed your internship with the Game Overthinker?
Dear Ivan - What cross platform game do you think people really need to try that they may not have heard of already?
Dear Ivan, How do you play games? You don't even have hands. Am I thinking too much about this? -Evil Corgi
