The Game OverThinker Overbytes - A La Carte
2/7/13 10:00pm
With the modern format of videogame distribution shifting to downloads can "a la carte" games be a thing of the future?
Will we be able to buy JUST the single player for Gears of War 4? or maybe just the multi player of CoD?

I'm in total agreement, I like owning physical copies of stuff, as is my mom, for the exact same reasons you described. Also thanks for explaining what "a la carte" is, I had no idea what you were talking about with that in the title and description. Good talk overall, totally agree!

I think they have started to do this...not entirely yet, though it seems like we might be heading in that direction...a couple of games have put their multiplayer out as separate downloadable games for people who don't want to buy the full game, but still want to play the multiplayer, like uncharted 3(Which is weird because the best part about the game is the story) and Killzone 3. Perhaps this is a shift to how things will be in the future...

Weird, but sounds like a good idea! but what if its a game where all the features are built into the main game ? ( like Zelda ) wouldn't that make the game harder to sell ?
darkhyrulelord
It would be a good idea to give people the option of getting the full thing along with the bells and whistles as well--sort to say. Then I think that it would be a great idea for sure.

great episode! I really wish that happens.

man i was always botherd by this i sometimes only wanted to play the campain but i still needed to buy the full game even though i didn't want a co-up or multyplayer becous that part of the game just suks or non of my friends have the game. people can spare a lot of monney with this idea

It is an interesting idea, seeing how many people praised the campaign of The Line and didn't care at all for it's multiplayer. Starcraft II has a great campaign and super-awesome multiplayer but not everybody is into that so separating the two would be a sweet deal.
What does this however have to do with the intro of downloading/cloud vs old school cartridges?

Hmm... I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure these "bells and whistles" don't actually exist, and different parts of a game rely on each other to run properly, meaning you cannot separate them. A computer program isn't like a piece of food you can split up and eat separately, because everything works together. I suppose certain games could be specifically built with this in mind, but it'd likely be much less efficient and cost more, making these AAA games even more "bloated" and raising purchasing costs, which would defeat the entire purpose.
Again, I'm not an expert on the subject. But as far as I know the only reasonable way to implement this kind of thing and make it all work together has actually been around for years in the form of micro-transactions/DLC.
The only reason I'm so positive despite not having the know-how is I guarantee numerous producers have had this idea before, since it's really not that complicated (in theory) and is similar to micro-transactions.

To me, the difference between a la carte music and a la carte games is that music is already, by its very nature, divided into small, distinguishable pieces. iTunes lets you buy individual songs because tons of people WANT individual songs; they want to get the singles or the radio hits or whatever without necessarily having to pay for tracks they don't like.
With games, it's more one single product, plus DLC, which is already pretty much the idea you're talking about: you can buy the initial game then pay for DLC later, if you choose, you can preorder with a DLC pass, you can wait until the cheaper GOY edition comes out.
But paying for a single player mode separately from a multiplayer mode? That only really makes sense for games like Call of Duty or Halo where the multiplayer is a draw in and of itself, and even then I get the feeling that fans of those series tend to only go to the singleplayer as a break from multiplayer, so separating them (especially if single player was seen as the "main" product that you need before you can buy the other stuff) would kind of miss the point. And, like other people said, if one aspect of the game doesn't sell as well as the other ones then one part of the development team put effort into something that, ultimately, became meaningless. Now, of course, that's the nature of Capitalism, but I don't think any company is looking for more ways to put out things that don't sell (such as a CoD singleplayer mode divorced from the multiplayer).
The only way I see a la carte working is for a game like Smash Bros or something where you not only have "multiplayer" and "single player" but you have multiple VERSIONS of each of those modes. Like, I know tons of people who've owned Brawl since release and STILL haven't played through Subspace Emissary because they don't really have any interest in anything beyond the multiplayer. Something like THAT might work, but not for every game ever.
