Nintendo won't go away. They'll merge with Apple and my predictions of the future shall come to fruition!! muhahahahaah
One can only hope that the impression left by giants like Nintendo will inspire future generations to create quality games like those of yesteryear. Almost like how in many an RPG, the characters stumble across an ancient, advanced civilization, and utilize the lost technology to make superior weapons/armor/etc.
I have no problem with Nintendo being a relic of the past. They spit in my face 20 years ago when they stopped providing quality RPG's on their systems. I will always enjoy the classics but as far as I am concerned, this ship sailed a long time ago.
I really don't get why the future is so bad and why Nintendo has to fight it. Do you really need multiple boxes with different names plugged into your TV to enjoy gaming? There will still be a market for first and third party controllers so why do you care if you plug it into a 500$ box or directly into your TV?
Depressing but true, A few years ago I was thinking about the day Nintendo would go out, and now that it's happening I cant really believe it. But even if they dont make consoles, they'll still make games, so I can always look to playing Mario for sometime to come.
(What if Disney buys Nintendo? O.O)
the only uplifting thing I can think of is that I honestly can't count how many people have said / written that they're waiting for Smash Bros.before buying a Wii U.
@Mcgunn That kinda reminds me of the latest Fire Emblem game, it was supposed to be the last game, and not only it was the best but it had really good sales. Maybe Nintendo will end up doing that who knows.
Overall I'm not too concerned about where the industry is going. Nintendo has always been able to command a huge audience of fans regardless of it's competitors. Now the Wii U may be struggling but that's not to say that Nintendo can't turn itself around. Just look at the PS3. A terrible start but it eventually became a very successful console. Nintendo may be facing similar problems that Sony faced (aside from the name of the Wii U itself) and they may succeed later on in the console cycle.
I'm at the point where I don't want any of the consoles. The PS4 and Xbox One are offering exactly what they did last generation, but with fancier hardware and online social network integration. The WiiU tried something different, but I'm not sure I want to try to look at two screens at once. None of them have enough attractive games to get me to buy one.
I also think that people (including Nintendo) may have been expecting too much from the WiiU. The Wii was freakishly successful. It was an outlier. If you know a bit about statistics, you know that things tend to regress to the mean. The chance that Nintendo would make two freakishly successful consoles in a row was pretty low.
I have to say, the prospective one device future frightens me, and may in fact turn me off from being a serious gamer. I like the unique control styles and different experiences the different platforms offer (which I still hold that Nintendo is the best at creating gaming experiences). This all-in-one style seems to remove a lot of diversity and would put gaming as a happy side effect not the primary focus.
Also good job on the end of this video Moviebob. That's a strong iteration of the Nintendo Spirit that fans feel right now. I hope they pump out the best Zelda, Mario Kart, Star Fox, Kirby,Smash, and Metroid ever. And while they're at it I hope they pump out quality new console versions of Pokemon, Earthbound, and even something brand new. However, since this probably is the last console generation, I hope Nintendo burns out rather than fades away afterwards. End it with a bang, if not with sales then with the greatest games from the greatest game company.
When it comes down to it, I think Nintendo's problem is exactly what everyone said it would be when the Wii U was announced. Nobody understands what the console is. An old friend recently came over to visit and brought over his GameCube to play Smash Bros. I said to him "Are you excited for the Wii U Smash Bros?". He had no idea what I was talking about, he thought that the Wii U was the touchpad controller. This is a gamer. Maybe not to the extent that people who watch these videos are, but he was a gamer nonetheless. It's funny to say that changing the name would have changed history, but it would have. There is an alternate reality out where the "Super Wii" is selling boatloads.
