Game Theory: Donkey Kong Country, Banana Wars
Donkey Kong Country is one of the best platformers on the SNES, but it also has a dark secret. What do K. Rool, Klump, Krusha, and the rest of the Kremlings have to say about America's secret past? Get ready 'cause this sh** is bananas.
I love your game theory I did not even know that even happen love it.
Thanks for trying to tear down one my favorite games.
No one ever expects the banana
Game theory Megaman!
this makes sense i totatly understand
EVERY time i watch game theory my mind is FUCKING BLOWN!!!
Couldn't help but notice one country that didn't get pillaged in that whole venture....Jamaica! We know how to keep out bananas lol!
i got a suggestion, could u do a game theory about "the force" or telekinesis
Great episode Matt, i would like to give you a suggestion for a future episode, I always wondered if the effects of the Wonders in Civilization V happend in real life, more specifically the new 7 wonders of the world, Thanks for the Time.
PS. Since i am Mexican i would like to tell the G1s that Mexico was invated by USA 3 times: 1: The Mexican-American war(1845-1847) that result in the complete fall of Mexico, and it was forced to give the southwestern part of the actual USA.
2: The entry in Mexico by USA Marshalls in the look out for Pancho Villa in the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920).
3: The reason you gave in the episode, OIL!!
I knew about the Banana Wars before hand, but not the exact dates of the occupations so I did some quick research online for exact dates. My dad was a history teacher while I was going through school and loved to quiz me about random points in history. He loved his political cartoons and we actually visited Teddy Roosevelt's Birthplace on one of our short vacations. The Political Cartoon you used I knew from a text book, I couldn't tell you which one, but they explained what was going on during the time pretty memorably apparently.
Excellent job! Did you already know this or research it? Either way, awesome response.
Sometimes I "selectively include" information to strengthen the argument, so way to see past the research I presented to call me out. I 100% agree with your analysis of Nature vs. Technology, but that doesn't provide quite as fun of a story. Plus, I'd say fewer people knew about the Banana Wars going into the episode (I know I didn't), and I like to tackle those bizarre lesser-talked about topics. And still, why the heck is K. Rool a king and the Kremlings wear army gear--they're just off design choices.
Nice episode 3 things though.
First the political cartoon you used that depicted Teddy Roosevelt as a King was actually made to symbolize how he was bucking for Taft to follow him as president... which eventually happened a scant 3 years later. Other than that 1 political cartoon there wasn't any other that showed him in a cape like K. Rool's... most went with the crazy hat and tan outfit he was known for. So if they were going for a correlation between K. Rool and Teddy Roosevelt it would've probably been better to show him in a tan outfit and whatever the crazy hat is called.
Second the Occupations of these nations lasted far longer than the presidency of Teddy Roosevelt... It lasted until 1934 and was for more than just bananas. Tobacco and sugar cane were also cash crops that they had interest in. So if the developers were aiming at American corporate evil through military force why weren't all the president's during the time frame lampooned for bosses or sugar cane and tobacco shown as prevalently as bananas?
Third Mines aren't natural... they had to be dug out by something or someone.
So DKC as a direct correlation to the Banana Wars I'd say is a pretty strong no.... They were probably going for the Nature vs Technology trope that was prevalent in the 90's in such show's as Captain Planet and Widget the World Watcher. There was a strong bend in all these mediums to show technology as inherently evil and nature as inherently good. So Corporate Krok's are bad and the natural beauty of DK Isle is good in this instance. Still a good episode though.
Occupy K Rool's ship!
Amazing, simply amazing. Game Theory is absolutely brilliant and so are you sir.
god.... this show is awsome....my mind is blown with every episode.
Remember, these episodes are meant to spark discussion and critical thought, not to be taken literally. Debate is a tool for education, rather than to incite rage and flames.
Wow! that was complete and utter bullshit!!!
Man he's skewed...
great episode.. just ruined my childhood is all :P
