There's an over-emphasis on it at the moment, and it needs to be toned down, but advertising is still incredibly important to sales.
The other point I wish to address is extending the length of a game.
Sure, you get more bang for your buck, but many of us are working/in school, or otherwise have other shit to do. As much as I love Skyrim, I can't afford to burn hours upon hours on a single title, however great it may be.
Even from a pure gaming standpoint, if I spend all my time on something like Skyrim, when will I have time for all the other games I can't afford?
Tacked-on multiplayer is pretty agitating though.
Those are the kinds of games that should've been polished to perfection with 1-2 release during this console generation. I don't care if it's the 2nd, 3rd or 4th game and if you tell me it's "New" to me it's the same game all over again and I don't buy the same game twice.
Darksiders is probably the best example of something done right... Except the companies went into bankruptcy : / The future doesn't look to good X_X
