Do I have it all figured out? No. But I have a wild guess...
3/26/13 8:29pm
ekolis: Certainly. I wasn't going into an in-depth academic study or anything, after all :)
3/5/13 1:51pm
Dark Magician: You could have expanded a lot on this subject, because if you are looking at this subject objectively, there is so much you can be talking about. And not over generalize on either gender. Because some girls love Halo and COD, others enjoy WoW, and others could play Harvest Moon all day. Of course for boys, platformers, fighting games, racing games, Shooter games, and RTS games are more straight forward, because boys are naturally competitive. There are some that aren't that way and would enjoy more RPG games for story, or just to grind as it were in WoW or just love a single-player experience that much more rather than Multiplayer. You can't just go and say, "there are twice as many females playing Angry Birds all day than males."

We can say males, no matter the age can tend to be very vulgar using foul language and be pretty harsh to anyone they see as a competitor that they see as lesser than themselves, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. Females have the capacity to do the same, but less heard of. They can be more responsible than males which would lead them away from games, because there is more important things to be done in Real Life.

Fox: Might be overgeneralizing a bit.
3/3/13 8:11pm
Nathan DiYorio: This would be at least mildly interesting if games weren't constantly hailed as masterpieces based on their "realism" by pretty much every guy who holds a controller.

And if the large number of girl gamers I know exclusively played Sim games. But most of them play Pokemon, Spyro, and Final Fantasy.

PhoenixGames: Well said my good sir! My brother and I talk about this and many other subjects on gaming all the time and were thinking about recording those discussions while either playing video games or just sitting around a table. Really discussing "genre definitions" in a meaningful and philosophical manner.
3/3/13 5:41pm
ekolis: Funny you mention relationships. I was actually about to post another blog about male gamers vs. female gamers and their attitudes toward gaming, and relationships were going to play a role (heh) in that blog...
3/3/13 2:21pm
Darkseid2: A bit short to really get your point across, mainly in that you're not being very detailed about your examples beyond D&D Dungeonmasters. You should assume that some of your audience aren't aware of many of the examples you site and make the message more clear with some more negative examples. Just a tip.

I like it when RPGs experiment with different ways to work in experience as something different from experience. I like how Sakura Wars does it, using the ton of VN elements as the deciding factor for the actual strategy battles with your team's mood deciding what bonuses they get in battle and how much damage they can do with joint attacks. There is no leveling up, only trying to improve your relationships with the characters on your team and thus making them more effective in battle through your earlier choices and actions.

So I remember the Mario 3 worlds a bit differently than most people...
1/28/13 12:24am
Noble Team 1: The only 2 world I really remember myself are "why is every giant" world as seeing giant koopa for the first time I thought I was playing the game wrong at first. The other world I remember is the last world as well it was a huge difference to the overall upbeat tones of the other worlds, but nice blog regardless.

Capcom isn't the only one...
11/27/12 8:41pm
King Meatball I: They might not be the only ones doing it but they are the ones who are taking advantage of this situation the most and mainly for all the wrong reasons.
11/27/12 5:52pm
The Self Procla...: The main argument against On-disk DLC is the (false) assertion that developers cut a portion of the finished product, or make a portion of what would be in the finished product, only accessible through DLC. I wasn't invalidating your argument, just critiquing your comparison to Hero Academy, which is a different case of "On-disk DLC".
11/27/12 4:56pm
ekolis: What difference does that make to the comparison? Just because it wasn't originally released on the Steam platform doesn't suddenly make my argument invalid!
11/27/12 4:54pm
ekolis: You're still arguing that people "buy" games? What decade are you from? Though that makes me wonder, could we sue movie distributors for advertising "own it on Blu-Ray" when you actually don't own it?
11/27/12 11:38am
LightningandIce: The problem with on disc DLC is that the consumer buys something but is restricted from using what they paid for. The gamers are being charged extra for something that they already own under the guise that they don't already own it. We pay for a disc (or in download-only games, code) that has things on it. We are then told that we do not own everything within that code and have to pay even more money to use a feature on something that we already bought.

Imagine if that happened with other products. Imagine buying a CD and having to pay extra to listen to the last two tracks. Imagine buying a car, then being charged by the manufacturer the first time you turned on the heater. Imagine buying a whole chicken from the grocery store but not being allowed to eat the wings unless you went back to the store and gave them extra money. The consumer has bought a product. The company is trying to force the consumer to pay more in order to use part of that product.

It isn't just Capcom who does it. Anyone who does this kind of thing is scamming their customers. The bigger video game companies get more flack because they are more famous, their games sell the most copies, and people generally scrutinize them more. It is in no way relegated to Capcom, it's a horrible practice any way you slice it.

ekolis: I looked up "what does maka mean in Hawaiian" and apparently it means "eyes"... Well that makes no sense whatsoever!
10/25/12 4:22pm
ekolis: Wow, I'm actually kind of surprised that Nintendo would slip something like that in!
10/25/12 1:04am
Chaos15: Dammit my internal Otaku has the urge to correct you.

"Yoru" is japanese for night. "Maka" in this case is probably a Hawaiian word. (Which would fit theme of the course) But is most likely a pun of "Making Woohoo" because in the Japanese version of the game the track is just called Wuhu Island 2.
10/16/12 6:16pm
Flapperdoodle: I'm glad you included Music Park. Damn, I love that place.
10/15/12 6:13pm
Gaijin Goomba: Mario Kart 7's Rainbow Road is my favorite hands down as well. Why? Because it stirs emotions in me in a way that I haven't felt since the Aquatic Ambiance in DKC 1. Not only does it bring you back to Double Dash, it takes you back to Kart 64, with overwhelming nostalgia. The course, in my opinion, also follows the music in a surreal way as long as you hold 1st place. Sort of like that one level from Rayman Legends. The epic 3 burst blastoff though the cylinder, the massively HUGE jumps to reach the end. The mood, the excitement, the music just ALLLLLLL sync up. It's beautiful. It's like what Flower does to me with the gameplay + music matching.

It's hard to describe. It's like, Disney-esk magical that takes you back to your younger, innocent years. Maybe a happier time.

I dunno...
