With the upcoming generation of consoles inching closer to a "Pure Digital" experience, fears about server shut downs and old games becoming inaccessable rise. Here's a Possibility..

Evilkinggumby: True. If there was just one or two games like this, it wouldn't have much allure. But cumulatively, looking at loads of old games, systems and services, it adds up. It also depends if you have the original games already, and on original hardware. Yes people can go and emulate to play games, and some of the emulator will do online stuff too. I was contemplating more of a 'true experience' with this. Also keep in mind the service would continue for a long time and so as more and more games get shut down from online (think of all this generations games eventually goin offline as the next gen takes over in a few yeards) it'll gain a lot of allure for being retro but also modern-retro. So covering old games from the 16/32/64 bit days but also a lot from the ps2/ps3 and xbox 1 and xbox 360 era.
Not everyone is as into the history and preserving it as would need, but between the different services it could offer, I think there is potential. And yes, $20 might be steep if you aren't really going to utilize all of the services. It was just a ballpark. Really they might just do a yearly like xbox live and stuff has to cover usage. Who knows.

Noble Team 1: While this idea seems good in theory I'm assuming their might be some free workarounds for older games that had online support, so that they can continue. The thing is that well for me would I really want to pay for older games to play them online a few times and then never play them online, well not really so 20 seems like a lot to me.

Evilkinggumby: I think so. I'd be a real novelty to see a long dead console fire up and actually connect to an online server and meet up with old friends on an old game. or at least have a central outlet to dig for old patches/dlc or even expansions that are lost.
Based on a post I did in 2011, this is a speculative prediction of where Gaming might go, for better or for worse! Not factual, but hopefully entertaining!
A not so short synopsis of why I think we'll see a very sluggish start to the WiiU's game library. Or: WHy are we seeing 3rd party companies ignoring the new WiiU? Lots of Hardware talk abounds!

Evilkinggumby: Which is why I stated it is impressive for their launch. It has sold well, the proble is it didn't sell as well as nintendo projected, and the sales tanked with the new year, further impeding progress. I wouldn't be averse to saying that the single detail of the WiiU not getting the 8 million units sold is going to be the biggest hurdle to get 3rd party publishers on board porting and releasing on the unit quickly. Right now any company publishing to the WiiU can get at most, 3.5 million sales. If their game costs so much that the profit from that many units is bad, they see no point in going there. If the WiiU hits 8 million, thats a significant jump and a much greater chance for profit. Especiallly for companies who do data analysis and see that typically 20% of console owners will buy game "X" of their library. 20% of 3.5 vs 8 is also pretty significant. Eventually if Nintendo keeps going strong and releases more first party games to draw in more sales it'll all balance out, just slowly.

IndyTheGreat: Y'know, the Wii U has sold more units in its first 4 months than the 360 and PS3 did in their first 4 months. EVERYONE knew about those systems, hardly anyone knows about the Wii U and if they do, lots of them think its a controller addon for the Wii. If this is happening, how will the system fare in the future?

Sckarton: yea nintendo consoles suck so bad that no company on their mind would copy their style, right sony sixaxis and move and kinect library?

Mr Popo: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on the Wii U is the best monster hunter I've played due to the way the gamepad is used.
3/20/13 2:47pm
Mr Popo: I would buy it on the Wii U if I had the convenience of the inventory or map on the gamepad. More for the same price? Hell yeah
Did you catch word that Goldeneye for the N64 had a fully-functional ZX Spectrum 48x emulator built into it? Do you even know what it is?! Well now there's a patcher to check out ancient Rare games your grandpa played!
Sega Genesis games are still being made! And the creators of Pier Solar are still hard at work!
5/30/12 12:36pm
Evilkinggumby: @Alpha Unit- whats funny is when they originally opened the polls for this game the first one was to help decide what platform the game would go on, and 65% wanted the Genesis over only 28% voting for SNES. so.. yeah, I guess it does.. lol
5/30/12 12:33pm
Alpha Unit: Blast Processing is still alive and well I guess.
Finally, word of a new Shin Megami Tensei game! Yeah, something to follow up Strange Journey!
5/30/12 8:07pm
WaterShocker: I'm a little surprised, and yet not-so-surprised that they would put it on the 3DS, but can't complain as Shin Megaten IV is finally happening!

PhantomExdeath: DAY 1. I had faith that this as well as the Soul Hackers 3ds port will make it to NA.
