Here's the second half of how I think Pokemon could be made even better than it already is.

MagnumMagnus: Ah ze Deutsche and their ability to make anything sound more dark, no matter how dark it may already be.

Is it too late to petition for the name to be changed?
1/11/13 11:27am
MagnumMagnus: Only two really, and only one Rock type which can make use of it, but fails due to its 'ability' that cuts its offense in half when its HP does the same.
1/10/13 4:28am
BenNiGeLing: "Dark" is called "Unlicht" (Un-light) in Germany, which despite not being a real word is the single most awesome thing ever uttered in our language.
1/9/13 10:21pm
Lohuydahutt: we have literally NO good special based rock type moves XD

MagnumMagnus: Ideas for Eeveelution names?

Bug: Buzzeon

Rock: Stoneon

Ghost: Phanteon

Dragon: Drakeon

Steel: Chromeon

Normal: Eeveeon?

Fighting: Strkeon

Poison: Toxeon

Ground: Dusteon

Flying: Flighteon

Pokemon is a fantastic franchise, but it's starting to run out of steam, and it's become almost too big to manage. What I think may keep this behemoth lumbering forward for some itme to come.
1/8/13 9:04pm
bigjoe91: If you're lucky you may find some of these names in there. Nintendo is always watching... *hides under aluminum suit*
1/8/13 7:26pm
MagnumMagnus: Pity they likely didn't follow my suggestions for starters, although that may change.

Names for the starters I wanted to see?

Grass: Buddling, Stanceroot, Bushfu.

Fire: Impber, Flante, Blastifer

Water: Bubblota, Thoughtdrop, Philosuge.

I had really good ones I thought up the other day, but I forgot to write them down.
1/8/13 6:13pm
bigjoe91: A couple of great ideas and well presented. Looks like you had a couple of things right based on yesterday's announcement.
1/7/13 5:11pm
MagnumMagnus: True, but my point is that you should have the option to earn more money if you need or want it. Other than trainer battles, the only other way to make moolah is by finding Nuggets and whatnot lying around, or going to certain areas and using Rock Smash on breakable rocks in hope of finding valuables.
1/7/13 4:13pm
The Self Procla...: "Mo' Money, Less Problems"
If you don't avoid trainers, you should never be hurting for money by the time you reach the Elite Four as long as you don't blow it all on something like game corner coins. You should never need more than a few dozen Milks/Lemonades and Repels throughout the main game, leaving you plenty left to spend on prepping for the E4.

InFamous is...infamous for its morality system and it's wildly different endings. But are they a simple matter of black and white (or red and blue in this case)? I dive in to explore it a bit deeper.
12/16/12 7:13pm
NickP: Well, the moral choices in the game are about the same as every other game with a morality system from my experience. You can either be Mr. by-the-book, who generally acts kind and courteous, and rarely ever kills anyone unless someone's life is in danger. Or, you can play a ruthless dickbag who will stop at nothing to get what they want, and don't much care who gets hurt in the process.

The game developers basically tell you that order is always good, and chaos is always bad, and bear that assumption out in the gameplay. So, sure, some of the decisions are a little more in the gray area, but from what I've played, the majority are just black-and-white, clear-cut decisions between being (subjectively) good or evil.

Now, I have only played the first game, and haven't played anything else in the series since (never really got into it). And, I didn't get all that far into the game. So, there's every chance that I'm wrong about it not being different.
12/16/12 12:17am
MagnumMagnus: What about the moral choices in general?

From what I know, Paragon and Renegade aren't so much good and evil as order and chaos.

Paragons are by the book, while Renegades do whatever it takes to get the job done.
12/14/12 5:41pm
NickP: (That is correct)

That's what I was saying. The fact that I'm forced to either go fully good, or totally evil is needlessly restrictive and does nothing to make me further invest in the game itself. It's not compelling. It also makes it very hard to tell a good story. Making someone too good/evil is just silly because

1) you can't relate to a soulless monster/ boyscout,

and

2) everyone is the hero of their own story-- IE: no one acknowledges the fact that they are doing evil, or openly admits to being evil. And, if they do acknowledge their wrong-doing, they are able to justify it-- especially if there is a higher goal in mind.

^ (A good example of this is Link from LoZ breaking into peoples' homes, smashing their antique pottery, and stealing their life's savings. Is it wrong to steal from innocent people? Most definitely so. But, it helps Link buy health/magic items-- which he needs to defeat Ganon, rescue the princess, and save Hyrule.)
12/14/12 4:25pm
Hunt3rpwns: Extra Credits?
12/14/12 4:00pm
NickP: I've never played The Witcher, so I wouldn't know about the morality system in place, but Mass Effect 3 took all of the choices you made throughout the series and made them completely meaningless (which I think is why everyone got so mad about it). You're stuck picking between red, blue, and green at the end. What the hell kind of choice is that?

Gaijin Goomba: -I was at a bar with some friends for Halloween two years back. There was a somewhat busty girl that was there dressed as a tight-fitting pumpkin. From about 10pm on, my friends, and other men would sit there playing with her boobs. And no ladies I don't mean soft rubs with slight nipple squeezes. I mean HARD slapping, bouncing, etc. I broke out into laughter seeing this. The girl got all pissed off saying, "WHATS SO FUNNY!!!" I wanted to say, "because you have no respect for yourself." Instead, I walked away. I later found out that she just didn't care because she got felt up at work all the time. I've also had the misfortune of coming across a Paradise TV clip where a guy was using girls butts and tits as punching bags. Yes... I'm sadly serious.

-I pretty much said everything about this that I needed to in that episode.

-There is a concept I think you may want to check out. "Yamato nadeshiko". In a nutshell, it's the composed, cute, fake way a Japanese woman should act. Cuteness is also very often sexualized in Japan. Granted this is getting into some of the hardcore hikikomori creepyass section of that world, but it happens. This is why child pornography is such a problem over there. Cute has gone beyond inducing arm flails and "awwwwww"s. It's come to the point where cuteness is a turnon. I can't explain it strongly without some visual aids, but I don't think you guys would want to see that.

- "You're American? Oh you eat beef everyday huh?" I heard this crap almost daily... The worst of it was when I was trying to explain to a few girls from one of my classes that not all Americans are beef-eating cola-swilling fatasses. But no... the goddamn math teacher had to pop in and say, "OH! He drinks Coke every day!" Then they all laugh at me like some great joke... That one one of the last straws that made me quit that job...

-4 out of 5 Japanese women under 30, I'm convinced, don't have a clue about what they want it life. From all the girls I met and talked to. ONE of them actually had some aspiration to have a career. She wanted to be an author, but even after I got to know her, she didn't have the true drive to do it. It was like this with every woman I tried to meet. And oh lordy did I meet TONS of gold diggers and trophy-wife wannabes. When it came to my high school girls, the ones that actually wanted to get married said they were "just going to find a rich man to take care of them." I can't wait till 20 years down the road when they lose their beauty, they get tossed in the trash. What's even worse is when I tried to tell them perhaps it's better to fall in love with someone you share many things with, they giggled and told me no way.

/sigh... See this? This is ALL a bunch of stuff I originally cut out of that episode, because I didn't want it to be super negative. There are SO many things that Japan does that I hate with a black brutal passion, but I don't want to be bitter about it, because it wasn't ALL bad every day. There were moments of pure bliss and joy that I experience living in that country, and I want to focus on those when I can, but the country has some pretty dark problem that desperately need addressing that no one has the balls to step forward and so something about...

...I'm goin to bed...

Japan, we love you, but we think you may have a problem. Or twelve. Here's the first six.
10/27/12 11:02pm
Gaijin Goomba: Alrighty let me see if I can address all of these. Granted, I can't do it with much detail right now:

-The education system is broken because teachers have no power. I spent MANY a class having to simply ignore loudass students because, by law, I couldn't throw them out of the classroom. So bad students have the ability to utterly destroy a class because of a constitutional loophole. ANY teacher in Japan can tell you how damn annoying this is. Also, the students have plenty of opportunity to express their individuality in MANY other ways besides fashion. Understand Japan focuses HEAVILY on outward appearance. Kids too poor to afford current fashion would be ridiculed. ...Yes they would. I've seen it. Uniforms remove that problem. Japan is also a country of ultimate conformity, so there isn't much of a reason to let them wear whatever they want. There's just too much conflict.

-Big cities are THE WORST culprits of racism. I hate, hate, HATE big cities in Japan. Why? Because that's where all the foreigners who don't know anything about Japan live. These are either folks who are visiting on business, or working for the conglomerate English schools that suck the root. I've NEVER had to deal with such blunt racism in the rural town where I lived, or the small communities I visited. The country folk were beyond sweet and accommodating. Country folk in Japan would take me out to dinner, buy me snacks, show me around their humble little town BECAUSE I was a foreigner with understanding of how Japan works. Go to Roppongi and see how seriously you are taken if you try to tell people you understand Japan. It don't happen jack.
-The problem I have with Japan's denial of not being homogenous comes from it's MASSIVE Chinese, Korean, and Brazilian populations that have officially, and lawfully integrated into Japan's society. My favorite student of all time was half Brazilian. He didn't really look Japanese, but he understood the culture well enough to be it. Yet I know he's been the subject of ridicule. Japan also has this nasty habit of denouncing folks who have lived abroad for longer than two years. I saw it with my own eyes. A teacher I worked with lived in England for 10 years and developed great English with a heavy British accent. The kids would tell her she wasn't Japanese. BULL SH!T she wasn't!!! She was 100% by blood and by raising, but apparently, internationalization makes you "forget" apparently. She now hates life in Japan and wants to go back to England. THAT is what really pisses me off.

-Your analysis of the Burakumin is pretty much spot on.

-I would argue that Japanese are not xenophobic. They just treat other cultures as a child who doesn't know any better would. They soak in stereotypes to remove their own sense of complete non-understanding until someone shows them the true meaning behind a cultural aspect. They then understand and live their lives with a personal understanding of the "why" in that cultural aspect. As a grassroots diplomat for two and a half years, I know this to be fact. On a side note. One of my best friends in Japan who was a half black/white American had been accused of being Brazilian, a whore, and stealing Japanese jobs. Yeah... I'm serious.

More to come in part 2.

Two show enter. One show leave. (Spoiler alert: it's DEATH BATTLE)
4/18/13 7:02pm
Eagleby18: I'd say i like Death Battle more, but Deadliest Warrior has it beat in one aspect: The intro/theme music.
10/15/12 6:33pm
MagnumMagnus: Well that was...lengthy...and a bit runon.

Nevertheless, you make a strong argument for DEATH BATTLE (even if it was a little hard to read), and for that, i thank you.
10/15/12 12:58pm
Jack_Red89: Deadliest Warrior was a show on TV that inspired Death Battle. They had limits on what they can do. Death Battle on the other hand doesn't have those limits at all. Obviously both these shows take on ending fight debates. Deadliest Warrior does that with people through out history. There does exist an exception Vampires vs. Zombies. Death Battle does that with fictional characters from any form of media. In other words pop culture if you didn't caught that. Yes does include both those annoying pop stars. Anyway Deadliest Warrior has two or more experts to help them to decide a winner. Death Battle just has our hosts which reminds me a lot of Nick & Johnny from Celebrity Deathmatch. They create a simulation through a computer with all the data they got. Keep in mind that a lot of their first fights aren't accurate. Most fights in Death Battle are dead on with their information. They also go a step further by taking some time to explain their decision. Some of these debates Death Battle takes on are tough to do so. For example Cloud vs. Link was one of their toughest yet they ended up picking the right winner. It's true you see more limbs coming off people in Deadliest Warrior. I believe that's easily top with how some of these death battles end. Almost everyone still talks about Metal Sonic winning over both armies. Ever since that episode they step up their game. In fact Mr. Lange who became the fight animator after Ben aka Wiz. Does an amazing job with all the fights he done so far. I'm still impressed by Thor vs. Raiden. Obviously Deadliest Warrior is more realistic which means they won't be as creative. They do test their weapons while Death Battle has a lot of weapons on theirs. I think Death Battle already beat out the number of weapons Deadliest Warrior has. Deadliest Warrior is an hour long show which some like me just want the fight. Death Battle on the other hand keep their episodes short & sweet. I like many episodes having Boomstick saying all kind of shit. One of my favorites was It looks like Raiden finally found his place in the sun. Both these shows talk about how their fighters think in their battles. I believe that's better done on Death Battle. I think the single greatest thing Death Battle has over Deadliest Warrior. Absolutely must be how close they are with their fans. Deadliest Warrior doesn't take ideas from their fans since they're busy. Death Battle has a smaller team that keeps an eye out for what we fans want. Sometimes they directly involve us in some of their episodes. What example is better than Eggman vs. Wily. I heard they had a poll deciding who Leonardo fights next. The results was Zitz from Battletoads became his next opponent. They also have two of their fans voicing both fighters. Just in case you're wondering I'm talking about Rainbow Dash vs. Starscream. Believe it or not most these episodes are heavily requestsed. The next fight between Goku vs. Superman is the biggest they ever got. How can Deadliest Warrior top that much support from their fans? The answer is it can't as Death Battle continues to live on. In conclusion Death Barttle is a much better show overall.

Icipall: DEATH BATTLE, superior, Deadliest Warrior, inferior.

Mach5Mike: While I haven't played a lot of games that feature character creators, the one that I have played that I believe is a prime example of the feature done right is Soul Calibur V. It took the simplicity and depth of detail that Soul Calibur IV's creator had (which had everything a good creator should include), and added so much more to make your character even more unique. These additions included the ability to alter your height, weight, and size of individual body parts, adding decals on any part of your character, moving certain items to any part of the character regardless of where they're meant to go, not limiting certain clothing items to either gender, adding an adjustable echo effect to the character's voice, and changing the color, trail (the lines that show up when swinging your weapon) and hit effects of the character's weapon. It also featured another aspect of a good creator, which is the inclusion of fighting styles exclusive to the creation mode only; which in this case was Devil Jin's move set.

While the DLC for this game may have cost quite a bit in the end, if one bought every single pack, what they got in return to me seemed worth it. The DLC included more clothing options such as nods to other Namco franchises (i.e. Pac-Man and Tekken), the primary and secondary costumes of some of the main characters (with a few headgears and clothing from past characters as well), and even modern clothes just because they look so out of place that they somehow work out. The DLC for this game may have been cut short (as for why, I'm not entirely sure), but expanded on an already perfect character creator interface, probably the best of the entire genre (companies like Capcom should be taking notes).

MagnumMagnus: No big. Criticism is to be expected on the 'net, but being civil is appreciated.
Ad for your suggestions, I don't know if I'll ever be able to get around to finding them ,but I'll certainly try.
As for Tenkaichi 2, I honestly don't remember much about it that set it apart from 3, except for having fewer characters and more exploitable attacks (ex. you could catch opponents in explovie fields far too easily.)
8/12/12 7:36pm
Kenshiro3: I completely understand and respect that. As for your suggestion, I just might do one... though I haven't been in much of a blogging mood lately. I have wanted to do a top 10 Anime Game list.

Sorry if I came off a bit harsh. Like I said I wasn't trying to be mean. I Just felt the list was a bit bad due to focusing exclusively on Fighting games & as a result served as a poor representation of anime based games as a whole. That said your choices were good... Though one Critique... Tenkaichi 2 > Tenkaichi 3 >X)

As for Super Robot Wars/Taisen games, they are QUITE good Tactical RPG games. Sadly Like Jump Ultimate Stars most of them have not been brought over due to licensing. However there is GREAT news. There are Fan Translated Roms for SEVERAL of the games. I highly recommend checking them .out on emu. And Original Generations 1 & 2 got official US releases if you wanna give them a shot though .

Sadly, The Initial D games have only seen limited arcade release over here in the states. This means they are a bit hard to find. I've only had the chance of playing one once at an arcade in Vegas while waiting for a flight. If you ever see one I HIGHLY recommend playing it. They are EXTREMELY fun arcade racers with FRICKEN INCREDIBLE music

Another would have to be Blaine from Pokemon since he fights in a Volcano in the Anime and betrayed Team Rocket to stop Mewtwo in Adventures.

MagnumMagnus: Haven't played Team Fortress 2, but I have seen all the "Meet the.." videos several times, and the Medic was one of my favorites.
