A three part summary of a gaming thesis. "With gaming growing to become a world spanning pass time that rivals, if not straight up usurps mainstream media you have to acknowledge that this will cause people to become further disconnected. It’s vaguely similar, to the sex scene in Demolition man, here in meaning that we will eventually progress to a point at which there is no longer a need for actual contact between people."

Martyven: Well it's very early here in Ireland (4AM) and I've been writing all night haha!
But seeing as how you've shown interest I'll publish the key parts of section 2 tomorrow.

Garbalen: Why is this a "Herculean task" for Microsoft, and why would you need two accounts? Live accounts are Live accounts. It already spans across everything Microsoft does. Running old content on a faster but similar chipset is a breeze. The same way an Intel i7 doesn't break games released several years earlier. I haven't heard much about the nextbox, but backwards compatibility is a big concern. 100% digital distribution console can still drop a $20 blu-ray in and send the cost to the consumer.

bigjoe91: Great read. I'm a major materialist collector, but I don't think going digital will be an option, but companies will have to make sure we do keep the rights to our games.
11/25/12 10:37pm
Pogue-Mahone: Yeah, I agree with digital being an option. We should always have an option when it comes to buying stuff. I like the special edition stuff, like my Batman Statue. I can proudly display it on my shelf. How can you display digital content? "Dudes, here's my download ticket for Nuke Town, my ticket for Nightwing, and HERE'S my ticket for a Sniper Rifle!" ...perhaps that could use a scrapbook instead lol
11/25/12 7:53pm
Mcgunn: There's no doubt that things are moving that direction, however something needs to be done with buyers rights. With physical copies of games, you are acquiring the licensing right to use the software, but with it you have the right to sell or trade that licence by selling or trading the physical game. This is an important thing in failing economies around the western world. Having assets to pass on to your family is important to people, especially when inflation is rampant and that green paper is becoming increasingly useless. People are mindless drone consumers for the most part, but I think that this problem needs to be addressed before Steam takes over the world. With Steam as the example, being the industry standard for digital game distribution: When John Smith croaks, little Billy Smith doesn't get any of his Steam rights, in essence those digital rights just dissolve into the air, as they were imaginary to begin with. This seems to me to be a scheme set up to ram a Steam Pipe up the consumers back end. It's unfair, it's bad for the economy, and it needs to improve. Good article, glad to see there's still some people not satisfied with DigDis.

However, your idea of losing your data being easy with digital games is a little out dated. Steam gives you a serial number that you own and you can write down. With that serial number comes the right to play the game. If worst comes to absolute worst you can just bring up PirateBay, download your game, use your serial number, and there you go. People just need the right to trade that serial number.

bigjoe91: I'm really late reading this, but I wanted to comment for a while on this. Couch gaming should have its place in gaming future as shown by the concept of Rock Band alone. Hopefully the Wii U will help with that. I can also see quite a future for couch gaming with the new 3D TV technologies allowing for full screen coop when players wear different glasses.
11/22/12 1:40pm
Martyven: I honestly can't think of many good retail titles that have good local co-op. I guess it's just luck on my part that the people I live and work with are all gamers as well, although if I was to edit that piece now I would have to say that I personally think that anyone born outside of the 16 bit era has never truly understood the worth in local co-op. If you get my point =]
11/22/12 3:49am
Fox: Most retail games do still support couch co op. A handful don't, but you should be able to find something you and some buds can gather round together and play.

Between work, school, and wives/girlfriends, it is a real struggle to get all my friends together in one place to do some gaming. Might get to all hang out once a month with careful planning. Once kids enter the picture I imagine it will be even trickier. That is why online gaming is great. We get to keep in touch, hang out, and all game together, even if we aren't in the same room. It is much less of a hassle to send someone a text and see if they want to jump on live and play for an hour or so. Not to mention, many of my friends and extended family live all over the country, couch co op just isn't an option at those distances.

Flapperdoodle: You are correct to the fullest extent. I love sitting down with friends with my Wii and playing some Kirby's Return to Dreamland. So many laughs. So many...
