Mass Distraction's Wall

I want challenge and I want it now!
3/16/13 6:07am
Mass Distraction: I think balance is just the perfect word for the whole matter. I do have to admit, though, I had lots of trouble with Raiden vs Shao Kahn at the end of MK9. That is mostly due to me being completely unable to play as Raiden but still :P

LightningandIce: Despite you having written this a long time ago, it just showed up in my feed today. Huh. Anyway...

When I finish a game, I like to feel like I have accomplished or experienced something. A game that's too easy robs me of some of that satisfaction. On the other hand, I still want to be able to see a game to the end without having to train like I'm entering a marathon. I like there to be balance in my difficulty. Challenging, but not impossible.

The exceptions are games that are primarily skill based. That is, games that aren't narrative driven and exist solely to test the player's abilities. I would never get frustrated at Pac-Man for being too hard, for example. In the new Mortal Kombat, I would have been rather annoyed if I hadn't been able to beat the story mode. Challenge and arcade modes, on the other hand, are fair game to be as hard as they want.

E-GAG101: I think it all depend on the type of game you are playing, for instance I really enjoy the Fire Emblem games even though I end up pulling my hair out everytime I play them. (I don't let anyone die) When I play a Fire Emblem game, I know that I'm in for a challenge, and I want it like that. But if I play though a CoD game or something I don't want to be forced to play the same mission over and over memorizing the patterns, behaviors, and locations of the same enemies that just take more bullets, because thats not how the game was designed. A CoD game is designed as a cinematic FPS that you just kind of breeze though, with the real challenge being in the multiplayer. But a game like Fire Emblem is designed to be challenging, so it makes it all the more satisfying when you make it through that tough battle without any deaths. I think that if you ramp up the default diffculty in a game like CoD, it would come off as "Cheap" because the game wasn't designed to be that difficult, there would just be more enemies with guns that do more damage. I think that difficulty is a design choice just like every other part of a game. And most companies now are intentionally choosing to design their game to be easy in order to reach a larger audience, much like how survival horror has become almost synonamous with the action genre. And when you turn the difficulty up on a game designed to be easy, it make the harder difficulty feel superficial. That's why games like Super Meat Boy are highly praised, because the game was designed with difficulty, it's not superficial, so it makes the feeling of beating a level feel genuine.

Mass Distraction: Sadly, I don't have a Wii U... Otherwise I would have gotten Razor's Edge first :D
2/19/13 5:44pm
Dark Magician: Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge is a total rehaul, so I suggest getting that. its the REAL Ninja Gaiden 3. For your question, yeah I would like more difficulty in my games. But you gotta think that difficulty 20-10 years ago is different from the difficulty of today. You want a difficult game today, you get extremely accurate enemy soldiers and more enemies to shoot through. But games like Dark Souls, Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge, and I can't think of a third game, lol. But you get my point.

After all these years Pokémon still makes me its bitch. Took me a three hour staring contest to figure out a rock puzzle in Ruby.

10/31/12 8:40pm

Part 31 of 30. See you next time!
11/1/12 5:31am
Mass Distraction: Yeah, I was actually gonna have a whole series featured at the end but Corpse Party was just as big so I went for somethign smaller :D Great game indeed.
Thank you for reading and commenting on these throughout the month! I'll try to make an occasional blog here and there, it is quite fun.
10/31/12 9:24pm
LightningandIce: Lone Survivor, eh? I don't think you could have ended with a better game. I already own it, and I can say that it's one of the best horror games I've ever played.

Anyway, I know I'm just repeating what I said yesterday, but it was real pleasure reading these. Thanks for posting them, and if you decide to keep blogging, I'll be reading your stuff. Thanks again, and Happy Halloween!

10/29/12 6:31pm

Part 29 of 30. Today we have a guest!
10/30/12 3:49am
Mass Distraction: You could check my friend's Let's Play of it. It's the same guy who wrote this for me. Link added to tl;dr
10/29/12 8:29pm
LightningandIce: Hmm. The trailer looks good, I'm not really into games that go for straight-up jump scares, though. I like tension and atmosphere. It doesn't look too bad, though. I'm not sure if I'll check it out or not.

10/28/12 12:58pm

Part 28 of 30. Something is about to happen on the shores of Lake Erie...
11/1/12 10:35am
darkhyrulelord: Gah! No weapons? That will certainly put a twist on the game!
10/28/12 1:24pm
LightningandIce: This sounds like a pretty cool game. It has some originality to it. Pretty neat.

10/27/12 5:36pm

Part 27 of 30. If you ever wanted more of The House...

10/26/12 12:07pm

Part 26 of 30. I may be a shade of Grey but I can make everything o-kay...

10/25/12 12:57pm

Part 25 of 30. Now, for something completely different.

10/24/12 12:35pm

Part 24 of 30. Two letters.
10/25/12 4:58am
Mass Distraction: I realized this when making the blog but alas, you cannot use any other fonts... Oh well :D The story really is a great experience, they don't make them like this too often. Hopefully you'll like it too!
10/24/12 9:32pm
LightningandIce: Due to the font, I couldn't distinguish between the "I" and an "l," except in the heading image. I kept reading this as "pound." It sounds neat, though. "One of the most emotional stories I've seen in gaming for a while" is what sold me here, as I'm a sucker for a good story.

10/23/12 7:28pm

Part 23 of 30. Still have that copy of Half Life?
10/24/12 9:34pm
LightningandIce: Sounds interesting. I own Half Life but don't currently have it downloaded. I don't really want to download it again just to play this, but I'll keep in mind and give it a shot next time I play HL.
