Is he world of pokémon a huge open world to explore or a nice and compact place that lets you get from point A to point B quickly? Or could it be boh at the same time? Read on and find out.

sharkjack: Thanks for the link. Recursive unlocking by islef isn't really what I was concerned about, though you're right in saying that's the technique they employed. Usually, Recursive unlocking lets you game developers make going from point A to point B really tough the first time, without forcing you to go through all that on subsequent trips. Zelda dungeons also use this all the time. In Pokémon however, it's not that you're forced to go through a tough challenge, (allthough with the Dark cave you kind of are) it's that you're forced to keep taking routes that take you to new places. If you take a route and find out it leads to a place you've already been, it makes the world feel smaller because it's compact. The way the world has been layed out however maximizes the amoun of time you keep on going to new places, especcially when you don't know exactly where you're going. That's the difference between using a technique and having mastered a technique.

Molmoran: I've always loved this kind of adventuring, it's like an RPG equivalent of Metroidvania!

Also this kind of mechanic is called Recursive unlocking, this article is really interesting and it covers Resident Evil's map journey. http://www.dreamdawn.com/sh/features/recursive_unlocking.php

Most stores stick to a single protagonist, but some change them out entirely. This can often be a difficult process, so lets'take a look at how it's done right.

sharkjack: Yeah, this article doesn't spoil anything past episode 12, but the parts it does spoil are best experienced in the story itself. If instead of reading the article, people get interested in watching/reading JoJo, then that's plenty satisfying by itself.
5/10/13 10:46pm
darkhyrulelord: Hmm....I need to experience some Jojo first before reading this. Apologies.
5/6/13 4:02am
Molmoran: Oh cool, I've not heard of Oreshura.

The Jojo links, I think that's the guys I was talking about, although I also haven't checked them out. I have to put it on my "to do" list for this year.

sharkjack: Well, Kamina is the one with the dream, the one who climbs in the Gunmen, gets himself a rival who he also fights outside the Gunmen and he's the one who gets the girl. The anime never actually has him as the protagonist, but all that stuff is happening to him. He's the cool guy. He's the guy that makes awsome stuff happen. Others naturally follow him. All of that is carefully crafted from the start to push the series and Simon forward after his death. You can already see it in the little things happening in previous episodes, but it's exactly because a lot of anime don't kill of their cool guy that it works. They hid their reveal under the guise of crappy writing.

I totally know how you feel. I have a few friends who watch anime. I got them to watch JoJo with me and we had so much fun watching it together. Even now every now and again when something unexpected happens during a game we're playing, one of us will yell UUUVVRYYY and the rest join in.

I reccomend watching the first few episodes of: "Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru" or Oreshura for short. It's got a character that loves making JoJo references.

Also http://ls57tiger.freepgs.com/jojo/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4598 might have some of what you're looking for. I haven't checked the actual links out myself yet, so let me know if it's any good.

sharkjack: As the only animated part for the longest time, I can't really blame people. A lot of anime fans aren't into the manga and the anime adaptation tries very hard to act like a standalone story, downplaying the Hamon and all. It's sad though.

How different is linearity when you look at it from a developers perspective? Is GTA not as non-linear as you thought? read on and find out.

Linearity is often seen as a bad thing in games. Here I take a look at what makes you feel a game is linear. Maybe it isn't really the linearity that's the problem? Read on and find out.

sharkjack: Thanks man, linearity is one of those things where a lot of people mean slightly different things, and when people complain about it, it often comes down to you not being able to do what you've been let to believe you could do. The part I struggled with the most in this article was to actually pin down what kind of linearity I was going to talk about. I have another post in the works right now that deals with it from another angle, but this is what I believe to be closest to what people usually mean when they say linear, so I wanted to do that first.

FrankHaggar: I think linear games can be very fun like R&C: Tools of Destruction and Max Payne 3. It depends on how the game uses it to it's advantage. Nice read.

online discussions on games are often plagued by sentiments like 'that's just your opinion'. Does good game design really just depend on personal preference or can we build up an argument that everyone can agree on? To find out we must first clear up what exactly opinions, facts and preferences are and how they relate to one another. Read on to find out.

Hyoubu Kyousuke, AKA japanese Magneto is an ESPer hell bent on making the world a better place for ESPers by crushing the oppresive force known as 'normals'. But what if he actually got his wish? Is the world he dreams of really that great? Let's find out.

The Nerd played this game up to be terrible but was it realy? Read on if you want to find out why I disagree.
8/28/12 8:20pm
sharkjack: James has often said that the nerd's opinions aren't neccicarily his own. I think this is one of those cases. He wrote a fantastic die hard episode and the game needed to be presented that way to work. I think that's fine, but I also think this game deserves another honest look and so I wrote this post.
8/28/12 10:49am
LightningandIce: I remember thinking the same thing the first time I watched that AVGN episode. James did make the game look liek crap, but at the same time, it seemed like it had a lot of depth to it that could really make it great. I'm sure it's flawed, but now that I have a more honest review, maybe I'll check it out.

Maturity in gaming is mainly used in context to how old you need to be to play. This means games that go overboard on gory violence and sexual content are often rated mature (especially for the sexual content) and that tends to be the end of it. But is lots of blood and sex the only thing that makes you mature? Let’s take a closer look.

frankhaggar972: I agree, games , movies and any other kind of art needs to be what it really is and imbrace it.

just came back from gamescom, it was a lot of fun. I got my hands on the WiiU playing ZombieU among other things. Having my 3ds around provided me endless entertainment by constantly showing me people who passed by. It was a lot of fun
