Dad hacks Donkey Kong to make Pauline playable

3/10/13 3:42pm

A Youtuber and experienced ROM hacker by the name of Mike Mika and his little girl love to play classic games together, her favorite being Donkey Kong. Earlier this week, they were playing the game together and she asked if she could play as the girl (Pauline) and was disappointed to learn that she couldn’t. This is when Mika decided to use his skills to craft a special gift for her. He made Pauline a playable character!

Here’s how it all happened according to the video’s description:

“My three year old daughter and I play a lot of old games together. Her favorite is Donkey Kong. She asked me if she could play as the girl and save Mario. She's played as Princess Toadstool in Super Mario Bros. 2 and naturally just assumed she could do the same in Donkey Kong. I told her we couldn't in that particular Mario game, she seemed really bummed out by that. So what else am I supposed to do? Now I'm up at midnight hacking the ROM, replacing Mario with Pauline.”

Gotta give the man credit for going the extra mile to make his kid happy. Good on you Mr. Mika.

After seeing this, I can’t help but wonder what this project would look like if it were an actual Nintendo product. I bet it’d be something interesting….or at the very least something better than Super Princess Peach.

I like this and I don't. It's a nice thing to do and a fun little project if you know nothing about modifying game. At the same time, it's kinda like "come on..." I think we've heard of something similar before, was it something about some father lying to his daughter about Link being a girl or something?

It's like... okay, she's little, it's fine. But at the same time, your kid could probably get over it. If not... wow.

Sorry.

This guy is an awesome father for doing this. Even if the process wasn't that extensive, it's the sentiment behind it that makes it so heartwarming. If I have a kid who's into video games, I could see myself doing cool stuff like this for them, and I would be more than willing to do it too. You know what, even if it wasn't for video games, I would do my best to do cool stuff regardless of what my kid's hobbies would be.

Father of the year right here. This is just as awesome as when a father changed the dialogue of Wind Waker (?) to change Link into a girl. i think that's how it went.
