I don't see why one should exclude a game like that. Path of Exile is made by what seems to be a group of guys who played Diablo II more than I ever did!
PoE feels very much like Diablo II - down to the nitty gritty of the game mechanics. That isn't to say "don't play Torchlight" - It costs the same amount to play both as it does TL2. Especially since Path of Exile is free (with micro-transactions, the same way you can buy "stuff" for League of Legends, but not "power").

One thing I want to point out, for better or worse, this game is immediately more socially immersive right off the bat. There's Global and Trade chats right there in game for the whole world to see. You can turn them off if you don't wanna hear all the crap that goes with a server-wide global chat room, but it definitely made the game feel a lot more "alive" than D3 ever did.
