The team behind this Half-Life short film have found so much success, they're going to take it to the next level. Using  Indie GoGo, they hope to raise enough money to develop a six episode Half-Life series based on the pilot 'Enter the Freeman'.

If the actors weren't so shitty, this probably would be a really amazing series. 1. Shitty actors 2. Shitty zombies 3. I can't believe they found someone who looks like freeman before Valve did.

Er. Well they could do the pilot for free. That was good. And non of the footage in the video is from that.

So... they have already made at least 1 other episode... Probably with the payment they get for half a million views on Machinima... Which they would get again for the next episode they already have made...

And they still have all the props for the first episode so they dont have to pay for those again...

Hmm...Free Money is cool huh

Uh... are you serious? Independents typically fund a lot of projects and pilots like these out of their own pockets, and half a million views on Machinima cannot come even remotely close to funding a fan film, let alone just one of those costumes. Not to mention shooting/producing separately like your suggesting would cost even more, maybe even double or triple.

Before the whole crowdsourcing revolution, these things would just get made. And they would have to have faith in their projects to turn a profit afterwards.

Now its just 'give us money then we make this.. and also put ads on the video anyway'

Just to clear things up

It did get made. Chariotdrive made the first episode "Enter the Freeman" out of our own pocket. We put it on our channel and DID NOT run any adds on it. Infectious Designer made 2 half life projects and did not run ads on them either.

Also the revenue from half a million hits wouldn't even cover food on the series.

Many fans wrote to us and asked us to make more. We don't have $75k laying around so we asked the fans to support us. Without angel investment with no chance of recouping the cost. This is the by far the best way to make a project like this happen.

You can't really turn a profit from a fan project, we have no plans for that, or to run any ads on the series. Also even if Google decided to quadruple the ad revenues, it still wouldn't even come close to covering the cost.

Once we finish we are giving away the major props and costumes in free giveaways to anyone that wants them. For example Freemans HEV suit and the Headcrab mask.

This is a fan project made by fans of Hal-Life, for fans of Half-Life.
